Change numero uno: The celebrity guest judges will appear during the first auditions, but they won't be invited to participate during the final sing-offs. Brandy, LL Cool J and Gene Simmons are lined up. Change number two: (Anyone still awake here?) The semifinal round will last just three weeks instead of five and there will be 24 chosen instead of 32. And number three: (Wake up!) During the semifinals (starting Feb. 21), contestants will be divided into two groups: one which will compete on Monday, one on Tuesday. Then on Wednesday we'll get to vote out four contestants (two from each group) after three weeks of that and three times Seacrest's signature long pauses. Hurrah! We'll have the 12 finalists. American Idol Changes
It needed an extreme makeover bad, if you asked me. The show just dragged. So instead of dragging on for so many weeks, they're just going to put more episodes on during the week. From Kristin at E! Online:

But wait!!! Didn't you hear??? Tommy Lee is going to be a guest judge. Now there will be swearing on Idol. That might be worth tuning in for.....
