Phantom

This movie was so irritatingly bad I could barely stand it.

The music is horrid (especially the pseudo-80's-rock title song which is totally appropriate for a story set in 1870). The lyrics are even worse. The direction was piss-poor. Joel Schumaker might be the worst director working today; he's only managed to make two movies that I can stand to watch (The Lost Boys, Tigerland). I don't think it's a good thing when you walk out of a movie with the feeling that you just sat through two-and-a-half hours of non-stop slow-motion.

Having said that, I thought the cast was really good. Phantom and Christine had a really sexy moment during "Past The Point of No Return" that was unexpected (a song I didn't even remember was in the musical). In fact, I thought Gerard Butler was really effective as The Phantom (until the end when Joel Schumaker turns him into Sloth from The Goonies). This guy should be in more movies.

OK, I need to watch something else to get POTO out of my head. Oh good, Desperate Housewives!
