Wow. The hype is justified. I did not expect to love this movie. I loved everything about it. It was stunning. You think you know where the movie is heading, and then the plot turns. It is exciting, witty and, mostly, devastating. I cried. The performances were amazing. I never really knew what the big deal was about Clint Eastwood until now. Morgan Freeman is so incredibly intelligent and warm. And Hilary Swank is truly phenomenal. I wouldn't be surprised if she wins another Oscar. I haven't seen anything like this all year (except maybe Kate Winslet). Same goes for the movie. I think it's been a pretty strong year for film, and this is right at the top of my list with Eternal Sunshine, Before Sunset, Kill Bill II and The Incredibles.
I have always loved movies about people finding themselves a family when they don't have one of their own (Boogie Nights comes to mind). I just didn't expect that, in the end, this is really what the film is about. Well, that and so many other things. Making sure your life counts and that you accomplish your dreams, believing in yourself, living your life without regret, the incredible impact your life can have on others. And finally, love. Not romantic or sexual or anything like that. Just unconditional. The kind that everyone needs in their life.
This movie will haunt you.
