So Sad...

From towelroad:

"In 2001, FEMA warned that a hurricane striking New Orleans was one of the three most likely disasters in the U.S. But the Bush administration cut New Orleans flood control funding by 44 percent to pay for the Iraq war...

...A year ago the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposed to study how New Orleans could be protected from a catastrophic hurricane, but the Bush administration ordered that the research not be undertaken."

National Guard military policeman stationed outside of Superdome: "This is mass chaos. To tell you the truth, I'd rather be in Iraq. You got your constant danger, but I had something to protect myself. [And] three meals a day. Communications. A plan. Here, they had no plan."

Crooks and Liars: "Anderson Cooper was visibly upset today by the fact that 'person after person' came up to him asking why the federal government hasn't shown up to help out yet."

Do not rely on the national TV people to give you the news on New Orelans. Go to www.nola.com - the Times-Picayune is still reporting online and putting out an electronic version of their paper despite having to leave their office and move to Baton Rouge. Local newspapers are the place to get the real news. They give a crap and they live down there, unlike the thousand Nordic blondes reporing on TV. Plus the Times-Pic published a 5-day series a while back on exactly what would happen if a hurricane struck - and yes, they got it right. This is why I am in newspapers.

Also, www.slate.com has an interesting article how the national media is avoiding the whole race/class issue.
