This is the most intriguing TV show I've ever watched. Talk about taking risks with the storytelling. There's sure to be some backlash (my roommate), but I LOVE it!
So basically, Desmond found the hatch and was told he needed to press a button every 108 minutes or else the world would be destroyed. Yup.
