F'in Bush

This just cracks me up. The religious right freaks out when Kid Rock is invited to perform at the Bush Twins' Inaugural Event. So bye, bye, Kid Rock. And hello.... Fuel? And how does Brett Scallions, the lead singer, open the concert?

"Welcome to the greatest fucking country in the world!"

That's sure to bring tears of pride to Jerry Falwell.

Point (un)Pleasant

It looks absolutely nothing like The O.C. from the commercials, so I'm a bit curious now that it's being compared to my new favorite show. Here's an assessment from Media Life. Now you decide if you want to watch:

Quality of show (on a scale of 10): 5.5 One thing “Pleasant” didn’t steal from “The O.C.” is its manic pacing. Things develop a bit too slowly in the pilot, and if the writers would simply speed things up, that would help the show. It could also use more humor, since the setup is so campy. Judy is the only one who shows spirit. When a ditzy classmate looks at her uniform and asks whether she works at the gas station, actress Aubrey Dollar smiles and answers back sweetly, “No, I’m volunteering.” You’d expect more bite from a show that boasts former “Buffy the Vampire” writer Marti Noxon as executive producer. You’d also expect better acting, but the cast makes the actors on “According to Jim” look charismatic. And former “Melrose Place” hunk Grant Show seems to have wandered over from syndication without any discernable reason for being. Flesh him out or drop his cryptic caretaker character.

Idol Chatter

American Idol premiered last night. I don't know about anyone else, but it just doesn't hold quite the same attraction for me anymore. I used to really enjoy watching the auditions and making fun of those who had no talent. But, it's become tiresome and repetitive. And the way they try to make it suspenseful, like "will he make it or not?" is just plain cheesy. Maybe it will get better once the competitions heat up. Or maybe not. Time will tell.

Good Riddance!!

From Television Without Pity:
Well, all good things must come to an end, right? Right. So this week, once Hayden and Aaron have gotten the obligatory begging out of the way, the action moves from Corsica to Ethiopia, which Kendra is just sure is going to be poor people again, like, how tiresome, we just saw poor people! A Detour involves mud-slinging and roof-dragging, and then there is a critical donkey juncture (don't question it; just go with it) at which Jonathan and Victoria forget the thing about bringing two donkeys, and they only bring one. Yeah. I know. It's kind of too obvious, but the fact remains that Jonathan and Victoria are finally eliminated, after ruining only about two-thirds of the season for me personally. I'd say I hope they get counseling, but I really have to admit I don't care. In other news, El Hornio is getting nastier, Freddy is getting more psycho, and Kris and Jon? Smiling through, as usual. Oh, and it turns out that Ethiopian children are really nice. You know what causes that? Great breeding.

Good episode. Looking forward to next week cuz Jonathan's whiny-ass won't be on anymore. FINALLY!

The Apprentice: The Musical

That's the rumor, folks.

Survivor in Hot Water

From The Smoking Gun...

JANUARY 18--Richard Hatch, the first winner of CBS's "Survivor," was charged today with failing to report his $1 million reality TV windfall to the Internal Revenue Service. The below two-count criminal information, unsealed today in U.S. District Court in Rhode Island, charges Hatch with filing a false 2000 tax return that omitted his seven-figure "Survivor" winnings. The nudity enthusiast, 43, is also charged with filing a false return for 2001 (he allegedly did not report $321,000 paid to him by a Boston radio station). If convicted of the felony charges, Hatch could face a maximum of five years in prison for each count and could be hit with a $250,000 fine. Hatch is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges in Providence federal court January 24.

He's definitely gotten more than his allotted 15 minutes of fame, huh?

The Real Fockers

Yep, kids, the world really is full of Fockers. Well, not completely full. The name is fairly common in the Netherlands, and variations include Fock, Focke, Fockes, Focck, Fockk, Foock, Fohck, Fockez and Fockz. While rare in the States — there were no Fockers registered in the 1990 nationwide census — there is a family crest featured at the House of Names Web site.

And there are enough Fockers out there that Universal Pictures staged a Focker family reunion at Universal Studios Orlando last month. For three days, people with the legal last name Focker were invited to share their family histories and stories with other Fockers.

Apparently, the clan is quite large in British Columbia, Canada, as 21 members of the extended Focker family flew in from there to join in the festivities. To beef up the guest list, some Foeckings from Cleveland and New York were flown in as well.

Presumably, they had a Foecking good time.

Fatass Maguire and other GG gossip

All from the indespensible Page Six:

Tobey Maguire was supposed to introduce the clip of "The Aviator" at the Golden Globes but he dropped out at the last minute, supposedly because he's overweight and his handlers want to keep him out of sight until he loses the lard.

Mischa Barton and Brandon Davis had a lovers' quarrel at the InStyle/Warner Bros. party, which ended when "Mischa slapped Brandon," a partygoer said. The temperamental twosome made up and left together shortly thereafter.

Nicky Hilton and "Entourage" star Kevin Connolly also looked "miserable," our spies say. Hilton was upset after a run-in with Shannen Doherty in the bathroom at the Glamour/Miramax party at Trader Vic's. The two hate each other ever since Nicky's sister Paris — mysteriously absent from the evening — did a sex tape with Doherty's ex, Rick Salomon. "Shannen won the staredown and Nicky backed off," a spy laughed.

Certainly the most newsworthy item of the day

Movie star Nicole Kidman has a bizarre fear of butterflies she can't overcome. The Cold Mountain actress developed the terrifying phobia when she was a child in Australia and despite endless attempts to shake off the problem, she still can't stand the pretty insects. She reveals, "Sometimes when I would come home from school the biggest butterfly or moth you'd ever seen would be just sitting on our front gate. I would climb over the fence, crawl around to the side of the house - anything to avoid having to go through the front gate. I have tried to get over it (the phobia) I walked into the big butterfly cage at the American Museum of Natural History and had the butterflies on me, but that didn't work. I jump out of planes, I could be covered in cockroaches, I do all sorts of things, but I just don't like the feel of butterflies' bodies."

Nikki Kidman is fucking weird. This is nearly as irrational as Frankie's fear of large boats on the Real World.

Reality on MTV and more

Doing everything Fox says it won't, here's what is on MTV's lineup:

- The Nick Lachey Project" will premiere in April
- “Trippin’,” which follows actress Cameron Diaz and her friends as they travel to remote locations, premieres March 28 at 10:30 p.m.)
- A third reality show starring Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker and his wife also premieres in April

Comedy Central has plans for “Stella,” a scripted show starting this summer, “Con,” starring Skyler Stone and debuting April 6, and “The Hollow Men,” a sketch comedy show launching March 10.

Spike TV will launch “Invasion Iowa” on March 29, a comedy miniseries that has William Shatner playing pranks on inhabitants of a small Iowa town.

CMT will start “Popularity Contest” April 11, which puts 10 city people in a small town and has the residents vote for their favorite. And TV Land will launch “Chasing Farrah” March 23, a reality show that follows Farrah Fawcett.

Elsewhere, ABC has had much success with the dramas “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives” this season, and that success has translated into a slew of new drama pilot orders for the network. Among them are “Night Stalker,” which has a journalist looking into freak occurrences, “In Justice,” about lawyers defending the wrongly accused, “Soccer Moms,” about two bored moms who become private investigators, and “Lennie Rose,” about a woman searching for love and riches.

Oh, how I will miss "Who's Your Daddy?"

We won’t be seeing “My Big Fat Obnoxious” anything again any time soon. At the Television Critics Association press tour on Monday, Fox entertainment president Gail Berman reiterated the network’s commitment to year-round scheduling but admitted that it needs to lay off the reality. She said the network won’t run the five additional episodes of the poorly received reality show “Who’s Your Daddy” and said while the appetite for reality was still out there, “I do think over-saturation in the marketplace ... is going to have an effect on production. The best generally survive and others get swept away." Thus the network is debuting several scripted shows this season. Fox will bring back the animated comedy “The Family Guy” Sunday, May 1 at 9 p.m., followed by the debut of another Seth MacFarlane animated series, “American Dad” at 9:30. “Dad” will make its unofficial debut on Super Bowl Sunday, after a postgame edition of “The Simpsons.” Fox has also added “Life on a Stick” to its schedule, a sitcom that will debut Wednesday, March 23 at 9:30 p.m. And it has been confirmed that “That ‘70s Show” will return for its eighth season next fall, but will do so without stars Topher Grace and Ashton Kutcher, though both may make future appearances on the show.

Whose Got Butt?

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Fox says it covered up the naked rear end of a cartoon character recently because of nervousness over what the Federal Communications Commission will find objectionable. The latest example of TV network self-censorship because of FCC concerns came a few weeks ago during a rerun of a "Family Guy" cartoon. Fox electronically blurred a character's posterior, even though the image was seen five years ago when the episode originally aired.

Interesting that it's okay for most television shows to make blatant sexual references but a CARTOON butt has to be blurred out?

The Ivy / Noah's Bagels

The Ivy is known for celebrity sightings. It was my first time at the original Ivy on Robertson in West Hollywood (I eat at the one in Santa Monica very frequently for work). I noticed paparazzi flashes from the sidewalk, so I decided to take a walk around the restaurant after I used the restroom. I saw Peter Gallagher (The O.C.) dining with Denis Leary (Rescue Me) almost on the sidewalk. I also saw Cameron Mannheim dining with a friend in an obscure corner away from the photographers.

The next morning, I had brunch at Noah's Bagels and was in line right behind Jon Favreau (Swingers)! So it's been a big week after a several month long dry spell. I love L.A. (plus it's 80 degrees today).

First Brad & Jen

And now Ashlee and Mary Kate. They are moving out and will live apart from now on. Says a source, "Mary-Kate and Ashley want to do the independent thing and live on their own."

Jamie Foxx

Wow, touching. His speech was nice, especially when he said he always thought it was corny when people said someone's "lookin' down" on them. But after the year he's had, he's "got a feelin'" about his grandma.

He was also funny. Prior to New Years Eve in Miami, his agent warned him, "When you're in Miami, don't mess this up."

Angelina

"I've been painted as the Wicked Witch of the West and a marriage wrecker. But all I've ever been to Brad is a shoulder to cry on. Half the world believes we had an affair and I'm the one to blame for his split. But the truth is I was there to try to help him through his pain. He longs to be a father and he's been in emotional turmoil for a long time because that hasn't happened for him."

Mariah Scary

Have you missed her? I haven't. But in case you did, here's some news:

Mariah Carey has posted a sound clip of her new single, "It's Like That," on her official website. The new song--which also features Jermaine Dupri and Fat Man Scoop--is from Carey's upcoming release titled the Emancipation Of Mimi due out on March 22. Audio clips of two other new tracks--"Say Something" which features Snoop Dogg, and "Tonight" featuring Pharrell--have been making the rounds on Internet message boards but, "It's Like That" is the first single to be officially released online by Carey.

Carey's official website is mariahcarey.com and her fan club site is honeybfly.com.
This is Carey's first studio album since 2002's Charmbracelet.

The Surreal Life

I must admit I hadn't really watched this show before but did happen to catch the first episode of the newest edition. Can you say, OH MY GOD??? In the first episode we had drunkeness, nakedness and fighting!! What more could a person want in reality tv? But this time it was freakish. The drunkeness, nakedness AND fighting all involved Verne Troyer, aka Mini Me, from Austin Powers.

I don't know about anyone else, but the sight of a drunk midget riding around naked on his cart was more than I could stomach. And, watching him oogle the model girl as she laid on the table with sushi all over her naked body (don't ask) was also more than a person should be subjected to in one program. Actually, in one season.

It was like watching Bizzaro-World.... Christopher Knight (Peter Brady) seems to be the point-person to solve all problems in the house. He even alluded to the whole episode as being very "Brady". Ugh. Also, Chyna is a member of the cast (the amazon-like dark-haired wrestler woman). She's a total drunk and actually moved into Verne Troyer's room. Hello!! You are 8 feet tall... did you happen to notice the closet was 2 feet high and the bed was only 6 inches off the ground???? She's a trip.

I am oddly attracted to this show and actually rather ashamed to admit it. But, in the interest of reporting all things Pop Culture, it's my duty to share this sort of information.

20 Questions

20q.net

Oddly creepy.

His love of what?

From The New York Times:

"Roland W. Betts and George W. Bush have been needling each other for more than 40 years, ever since the day they met as remarkably similar freshmen at Yale. . . Both came from families that stretched generations back into the aristocratic precincts of the East Coast, both had sharp senses of humor, both loved sports and jocks."

Ashlee Update

She claims that her heavily booed performance at the Orange Bowl was due to technical difficulties and her pro-USC stance. Excuses, Excuses. This is beginning to mirror a bad relationship where the couple keeps getting back together even after he hits her.

Spielberg

I always anticipate a new Spielberg film. (He is my other big star sighting. I saw him shopping for CDs at Borders with his children a few years back.) Here's some news:

Steven Spielberg's long-anticipated biopic of Abraham Lincoln is finally going ahead, with Liam Neeson in negotiations to play the US president who initiated the American civil war.
The Jaws director first expressed interest in bringing Lincoln's life to the big screen four years ago but other projects, including Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can, filled his schedule. Now, Neeson, who played the lead in Spielberg's Schindler's List, is in talks to portray arguably America's most revered president.

The film is to be adapted from a yet-unpublished biography by Pulitzer prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, The Uniter: The Genius of Abraham Lincoln. Spielberg is said to identify with Lincoln, who, like the director, was tormented by stress and medical problems.
Filming is to start next January, but first Spielberg needs to complete his adaptation of HG Wells's The War of the Worlds, scheduled for a June release. He may also choose to work first on Vengeance, a drama about the hostage crisis at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

SNL

This should be a good episode tomorrow (Topher Grace and The Killers) as long as they spare us from Debbie Downer.

HBO

I can't be the only one who longs for a "big" HBO show again. Entourage is okay, but Carnivale and Deadwood don't do it for me. I long for the good 'ole days of Six Feet Under, Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm....

Here's a rundown of what's goin' on at the Home Box Office:

HBO finished with “The Wire?” A decision won’t be made for several weeks, but poor ratings for the show may have finally gotten to HBO. Yesterday, during the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, HBO chairman Chris Albrecht jokingly said he had received a telegram from all 250 of “The Wire’s” viewers. The return of the show isn't entirely in doubt, however, since the network picked up a second season of the average-performing “Entourage” before the first season even began. A decision will be made within the next month or so. Programs that HBO definitely will be showing:

“The Comeback,” starring Lisa Kudrow, starting this summer

“Big Love,’ starring Bill Paxton as a Utah polygamist, starts production soon

“Real Time with Bill Maher” returns Feb. 18

“Deadwood” starts again on March 6

“Six Feet Under” returns in June

Married.... With Children Reunion

Well, not exactly. But Ed O'Neill guest stars on 8 Simple Rules tonight (with former costar Katey Sagal). Where's Bud when you need him?

Logo

Sounds like an interesting network, actually. I like all the movies it has acquired. From medialife.com:

The launching of a new gay-focused network was big news when MTV Networks announced it last May after years of discussion. Amid much hoopla, Viacom targeted the rollout for February 2005 and began securing rights to every gay-themed movie it could find.

One problem: Were the network to meet that premiere date it would only have, at a maximum, 3 million viewers.

And so Viacom has decided to delay the launch until June 30, when it hopes to have the cable network, called Logo, available in some 10 million homes.

The decision wasn’t really a difficult one. In addition to the distribution issues, Logo lacked a firm programming lineup. It is still making decisions on original programming and adding to the more than 200 movies and programs that it has ready to show, including the Tom Hanks AIDS drama “Philadelphia” and the HBO miniseries “Angels in America.”

But its biggest hurdle is distribution, as might be expected for a gay channel. The network has reached agreements with Time Warner Manhattan, RCN and Atlantic Broadband and is talking with Comcast.

Because Logo will be available only on the digital tier, it has a maximum of 40 million subscribers. Basic cable channels such as MTV are available in more than 85 million homes. Logo president Brian Graden told reporters yesterday that he hadn’t seen any outright aversion to the channel by cable operators, though he added that Logo executives have been sure to outline plans for the network in detail and describe anything that may seem controversial in advance.

He said thus far, no one Logo has spoken with has expressed strong reservations.

Graden also said yesterday that three charter advertisers have signed up: Subaru of America, Orbitz and Paramount, which, like Logo and MTV Networks, is owned by Viacom.

Graden also made several programming announcements. Logo has two reality shows lined up. One, “My Fabulous Gay Wedding,” will focus on same-sex marriage wedding planning, while “Cruise,” from the production company behind MTV’s “Real World,” will follow a gay travel cruise. The network’s first scripted series will be “Noah’s Arc,” a comedy-drama that follows a gay African-American who struggles as a screenwriter.

The network also plans to show 10 first-person documentaries, under the umbrella name "Momentum," on topics ranging from gays in fraternities and sororities to gays in the conservative Muslim world.

Other documentaries under the “Momentum” tag include “Beautiful Daughters,” a look at the making of a transgender version of “The Vagina Monologues;” “Gender Queer,” a look at gender identity and how it’s defined; and “Gay Republicans,” a study on how the 23 percent of the LGBT community who identify themselves as Republicans are active within their party.
All of those are working titles.

The network has also acquired the movies “Billy Elliott,” “Mullholland Drive,” “Far from Heaven” and “Being John Malkovich,” among others.

Logo also has made an agreement with CBS News, also a Viacom property, to receive specially targeted news programming.

BIG

Last night I went to a restaurant called Capo in Santa Monica. Between three of us (this was expensed, not paid for personally), our bill was $700. Granted, this included 2 $115 bottles of wine. (Now it all makes sense, right?)

The big news is that I dined right next to Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson! Nearly four years in Los Angeles, and that may be the biggest sighting yet.

Phantom Part II

A few gems from the critics:

A.O. Scott of the New York Times: "Of course, Lord Lloyd Webber's music is the whole point of the film, and Joel Schumacher, the director, does his best to find a visual style to match the vulgarity and pretentiousness of the soundtrack. He succeeds admirably, drawing on his long-ago experience designing department-store window displays to produce nearly two and a half hours' worth of overstuffed tableaux, the cumulative effect of which is likely to be a state of headachy nervous exhaustion. This kind of spectacle might work onstage, where numb enervation can sometimes be mistaken for exhilaration, but this screen version, for all its wailing emotionalism and elaborate production design, lacks both authentic romance and the thrill of memorable spectacle."

eFilmCritic:

"Actually, 'The Phantom of the Opera' feels like little more than a 2+ hour promotional video for perfume, jewelry, corsets and curtains. It's lead-footed, empty-headed and tone-deaf. Were it not for the superlative work from the various set designers and costumers, this would be the 'Battlefield Earth' of modern movie musicals."

Horror.com:

"It’s an undeniably ageless, engrossing screen story: One filled with drama, suspense, romance, and horror. It’s always been that way… until now."

Jan Stuart of Newsday:

"I still don't understand who Madame Giry is, or why there is break dancing in the 'Masquerade' number, for that matter. For some of us, the phenomenal popularity of 'Phantom' remains the greatest mystery of all, one left unsolved by this interminable screen spectacle."

Philly.com:

"Joel Schumacher's film adaptation of Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera combines fingernails-on-blackboard audio agony with bamboo-under-fingernails physical torture."

Contra Costa Times:

"But as realized by Schumacher, this 'Phantom' is like being trapped in the frilly bedroom of an absurdly romantic, borderline psychotic 13-year-old girl for nearly two and a half hours."

Orlando Sentinel:

"It was the '80s. You really had to be there. Preferably with low expectations."

Village Voice:

"Sure, all the ingredients of camp are there (oh, the hubris!), but this isn't a so-bad-it's-good classic. It's worse."

Slant:

"Like overpriced costume jewelry, this tasteless, soulless contraption is sure to appeal to anyone who owns Celine Dion and Meatloaf albums."

eFilmCritic:

"One of the worst filmed musicals I’ve ever seen, and that includes Cop Rock."

Idol Update

Here is a summary of People Weekly's Idol Update, just in time for the new season.

Kelly Clarkson - You all know what she's up to. Two albums - Three million copies - Not bad. It all goes downhill from here.

Tamyra Gray - She made an album and no one cared. It only sold 120,000 copies. And she has been on really bad TV shows (Boston Public) and a bad musical in NY (Bombay Dreams - because she's so Indian).

Justin Guarini - No one likes him so he cut his hair. No one recognizes him anymore and he no longer gets pelted by vegetables and metal objects while on stage or in public. Actually, people like him just a little bit more than Tamyra, because they bought 142,000 of his albums.

RJ Helton - He decided not to be gay (puh-leese) and is now a Christian "artist." His album sold a whopping 20,000 copies, and he recently performed for an audience of 30. Damn boy, you're famous!

EJay Day - Besides having the dumbest name ever, he has the dumbest job ever: performing on a cruise ship.

Christina Christian - Okay, about EJay having the dumbest name ever? I take it back.

Ryan Starr - She's been on The Surreal Life already, so don't expect much from Ryan.

Jim Verraros - Unlike RJ, he's admitted he's gay and signed with (no kidding) William Hung's record label. He recently performed at a drag queen convention in (no kidding) Ohio.

AJ Gil - He is unsure how to capitalize on his fame. One word of advice: don't.

Nikki McKibbin - She's also starring on reality TV shows (Fear Factor) and shopping around songs. She's even released some on a website devoted to, of course, reality TV (thefishbowl.com).

Note to readers: If you want a music career, don't audition for American Idol.

Oh, Clint, you comedian

From the New York Daily News:

Clint Eastwood squinted like Dirty Harry Tuesday night as he took aim at Michael Moore.
"Michael Moore and I actually have a lot in common - we both appreciate living in a country where there's free expression," Eastwood told the star-dotted crowd attending the National Board of Review awards dinner at Tavern on the Green, where Eastwood picked up a Special Filmmaking Achievement prize for "Million Dollar Baby."

Then, the Republican-leaning actor/director advised the lefty filmmaker: "But, Michael, if you ever show up at my front door with a camera - I'll kill you."

"I mean it," he added, provoking more guffaws.

Where There's a Will...

There's not always a way.

The Will, a new reality show on CBS, was cancelled after one episode. That's really bad! Usually it takes three or four airings or even a half season (remember Good Morning, Miami?).

Can we please call this the official death of reality TV?

Red Carpet Gridlock

We have a choice during the Golden Globes:

"The gridlock is due to the return of snarky fashion cops Joan and Melissa Rivers at Sunday's Golden Globe Awards [on TV Guide Channel]. Standing her ground will be newcomer Star Jones Reynolds [on E!]."

I really thought the world had been spared when E! got rid of the Rivers. But Jesus, Star Jones Reynolds? How annoying is that?

Survivor Palau

NEW YORK (AP) -- The island is about to get a little more crowded.

The 10th edition of CBS' "Survivor," set in the Pacific island nation of Palau, includes 20 castaways who will try to outwit, outplay and outlast each other to win the $1 million prize. The most recent "Vanuatu" and "All-Stars" seasons included 18 contestants while all other previous editions of the reality show stranded 16 individuals in an exotic locale. The "Palau" cast, announced Thursday, just might be the most diverse "Survivor" tribe yet. The oldest contestant is 57; the youngest is 21. The cast includes a bartender from New Orleans, a firefighter from New York, a dolphin trainer from Florida and a Las Vegas showgirl. Potential voting blocs might include the "lawyer alliance" (three contestants are lawyers), the "California alliance" (four hail from the Golden State), or maybe even the "my-first-name-has-double-letters alliance" (Ashlee, Gregg, Bobby, Jennifer, Williard and Jeff).

The 20 new castaways are: Coby Archa, 32, a hairstylist from Athens, Texas; Ashlee Ashby, 22, a student from Easley, S.C.; Gregg Carey, 28, a business consultant from Chicago; Bobby Jon Drinkard, 27, a waiter from Santa Monica, Calif.; Katie Gallagher, 29, an advertising executive from Merced, Calif.; Caryn Groedel, 46, a civil rights attorney from Solon, Ohio; and Angie Jakusz, 24, a bartender from New Orleans. Also: Jolanda Jones, 39, a lawyer from Houston; Stephenie LaGrossa, 25, a pharmaceutical sales representative from Philadelphia; Jonathan Libby, 23, a sales and marketing executive from Dallas; Jennifer Lyon, 32, a nanny from Encino, Calif.; James Miller, 33, a steel worker from Mobile, Ala.; Kimberly Mullen, 25, a graduate student from Huber Heights, Ohio; and Ibrehem Rahman, 27, a waiter from Birmingham, Ala. And: Ian Rosenberger, 23, a dolphin trainer from Key Largo, Fla.; Wanda Shirk, 55, an English teacher from Ulysses, Pa.; Williard Smith, 57, a lawyer from Bellevue, Wash.; Janu Tornell, 39, a showgirl from Las Vegas; Tom Westman, 41, a New York City firefighter from Sayville, N.Y.; and Jeff Wilson, 21, a personal trainer from Ventura, Calif.

During the live "Vanuatu" finale, host Jeff Probst promised that in Palau, "the game will be changed in a dramatic way. Everything the survivors have come to expect will be wiped out in the first 10 minutes." One hint: The press statement says three castaways are sent home in the first episode.

"Survivor: Palau" premieres February 17.

J.J. Abrams Night

Lost and Alias. Wednesday are now competing for my favorite night of television (Sunday's have Simpsons, Arrested Development, Desperate Housewives and whatever HBO currently has to offer). Last night's episodes were very good. Lost was creepy and, of course, posed several additional questions about the characters and the island. What the hell is that giant thang? Alias is off to a really good start this season. A lot lighter and breezier than last year's brooding season. Here's what Television Without Pity has to say about both...

Lost:
Boone, God's Friggin' Gift to Humanity and Locke are doing their thang in the jungle, which involves staring at the still unopenable hatch in the ground, because Michelangelo did something similar before he carved David (think Locke's getting a bit too full of himself?). Boone wants to tell Shannon about the hatch, but Locke expresses his disdain for that idea by bopping Boone in the head, tying him up, and smearing some hallucinogenic paste onto the open wound in his skull. Of course, if you don't know that it's hallucinogenic mind paste, like many viewers, then you spend the rest of the episode on the edge of your seat; Boone frees himself and Shannon (also apparently tied by Locke), the two of them run from the Iron Giant, only Shannon doesn't make it. That's right: Lostzilla eats her, and she dies in Boone's arms. When Boone gets back to the beach, he naturally has a thing or two to say to Locke about it, only it turns out that Shannon is not dead. And Locke wanted to know what Boone would see, and Boone needed to let go of Shannon, and that sort of mystical Locke crap. So either you thought it was a great twist, or Fonzie's revving up the motorcycle. Luckily, the rest of the episode was pretty good, and apparently all of it really happened. Hurley tries to make nice with Jin, and it's funny, funny, funny (it involves Hurley pleading with Jin to pee on his foot wound). Kate figures out that Sun speaks English; Sun's making a farm. The backstory involves Boone and Shannon, who are not related by blood; they're stepbrother and stepsister. And Shannon, feeling screwed over by her rich stepmother, sets Boone up by pretending to be abused by a series of boyfriends, whom Boone pays off so they'll break up with his sister, with whom he's secretly in love ("secretly")? And then Boone and Shannon do it (in the flashback) just before they head back home to L.A. on the doomed flight.

Alias:
Syd and Marshall and Dixon and Vaughn go on a sun-filled mission to a bank that requires all of them to speak in silly accents and, again, the mission totally doesn't matter. But the whole scenario made me laugh out loud, so that's a good thing. Then Syd throws a birthday party for Agent Sean and apparently his present is…Nadia? Whocka whocka. In Apple Store news, some fictional supercomputer has been stolen and it's up to the Appleseed gang to get it back. Well, specifically, it's up to Sydney and her girlish figure and a blowed-up car to get it back. While Syd's off saving the world from men with bad facial hair and Andalusian chateaus, Nadia's being given the third, fourth, and thirtieth degrees by none other than Jack, who's kindly offered to run Nadia through her security entry tests. Or whatever. His real reason is to…test how she'll act when Syd tells her Jack killed their mother? Yeah, I'm not clear on the entire situation. But it doesn't really matter because the whole "Syd seduces the baddie in order to do her job" scenario takes most of the rest of the show to get through, with typical results. You know, it looks like Syd's nailed the mission, then something bad happens, then Agent Sean gets kidnapped, then Syd gets captured too, then Vaughn and Dix have to go help both of them, then Nadia and Jack have to go help them too, then Jack shows Nadia some secret CIA documents that tell Nadia that the Baddie of the Evening was actually Irina's killer, not Jack, then Agent Sean and Syd kick some henchman ass and Nadia shows up to save Syd's life…and kill the man she thinks killed her mother. Wow. Way to think on your feet, Jack.

Nip/Tuck

FX has convinced the creator of Nip/Tuck, Ryan Murphy, to stick on the show for two more years! I don't really watch it because I think it's way over-the-top (yes, I watch Alias). But I have friends that swear by this show. I should really try again on DVD.

In other Ryan Murphy news, he is set to direct the film version of Running With Scissors, one of my favorite all-time books.

Another Tsunami Benefit

This is old news, but this benefit might be worth a watch. Who can resist Tom Jones, anyway?

From Launch:

Madonna and Maroon 5 have signed on to play the charity telethon Tsunami Aid: A Concert of Hope, which will air Saturday (January 15) at 8 p.m. on NBC and its affiliate networks--USA, Bravo, SCI-FI, MSNBC and CNBC. They join previously announced performers for the all-star event, including Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Sheryl Crow, Christina Aguilera, Tim McGraw, Norah Jones, Sarah McLachlan, Lenny Kravitz, Brian Wilson, John Mayer, India.Arie, Tom Jones, Kenny Chesney, Mary J. Blige, Roger Waters, and Gloria Estefan.

Proceeds from the two-hour live broadcast will go to the American Red Cross to support relief efforts in Southeast Asia. More than 150,000 people died as a result of December's tsunamis.

Always wear clean underwear

ROGERS, Arkansas (AP) -- There's another reason Mom is right when she says you should always have a fresh pair of underwear. A city attorney learned last week that they can attract rescue helicopters. Ben Lipscomb found himself lost in the flooded backwoods this week while duck hunting with his Labrador retriever. He only managed to make it out by tying his white briefs to the end of his gun barrel and waving them at an Arkansas State Police helicopter. Decked out in full camouflage hunting gear, Lipscomb was practically invisible as the helicopter made several passes at dusk. "They had passed over me a couple of times," he said after he was safe and sound back at his City Hall desk. "I knew I had to do something to get their attention." Lipscomb had been in the flooded timberland near Hollowell Reservoir for about 12 hours when he was rescued. To survive, he drank dirty bayou water and ate a raw duck breast.

There are so many places I could go with this story. But I will restrain myself.

Courtney Love

She's due in court today.

Just another routine day for Courtney Love.

Dreamgirls

This is an amazing musical and is finally going to become a movie.

And Bill Condon is going to direct. He directed Gods & Monsters and Kinsey. He also wrote Chicago for the film.

Please just spare us Beyonce.

Real (Nasty) World

Okay, last night's episode was just revolting. The entire 30 minutes were devoted to Mel's scabies. Is this the point where all the roommates start hating on her?

Cats & Dogs

It finally stopped raining in Los Angeles. (You've probably seen the stories on the news.) It has been raining almost non-stop since I got back from Ohio on December 29th. I know, boo-hoo, I live in Los Angeles. Stop complaining. Well, Los Angeles is nasty when it rains. And no one knows how to drive.

Can I go?

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Tenacious D will be joined by such rock heavyweights as Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, Beck, Foo Fighters leader Dave Grohl and Queens Of The Stone Age principal Josh Homme at a Jan. 17 benefit in Los Angeles for the victims of the Asian tsunami.

The Wiltern Theatre event will also boast an appearance by actor Will Ferrell. Tickets are $60 and $100. The show is being organized via the new collective Music for Relief, with proceeds to benefit the American Red Cross.

We're gonna need a bigger boat

Do you remember the scene in Jaws when Robert Shaw describes the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis? The one where 900 soldiers were plunged into the shark infested waters and only 316 survived? J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias, MI:3) is set to direct a movie based on this true story, from the perspective of a 12-year-old who investigates the story for a school project and the survivor who he talks to to research the story. It all sounds very intriguing to me.

Doin' the iPod Shuffle

(with regrets to Ickey Woods)

Apple announced a new iPod yesterday. The reasonably priced iPod Shuffle. Comes in 512MB and 1G models, starting at $99. The new iPod weighs less than an ounce and is similar in size to a pack of gum. Plays for 12 hours and holds 240 songs (1G model).

This is certainly a very cool addition to the Apple family. My 12 year old stepdaughter is already saving her money for one.

A Lost Tidbit

Thanks to Kristin on E!

From edved75:
Male-ias--that was freakin' hilarious. Any news on that other JJ show--Lost?

Kristin:
This is the week. The one I've been waiting for when we finally get to see what the bejesus is up with Shannon and Boone...oh, the stories I've heard! I'm expecting to need a shovel to scrape my jaw off the floor.

Get yer freak on!

A principal out in California is banning all dances for the remainder of the year, including the prom. He claims the students are freak dancing and he's fed up with it.

Ummmm.... not so long ago it was Elvis they would only show from the waist up and rock 'n roll was considered blasphemy. These kids seem all worried about missing their prom. I say, rent Footloose and see if there is anything to be learned there.

It's the pitts

From my favorite news source comes some juicy theories of the Brad and Jen split. IMDB says:

The reason behind Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston's separation remains unclear, with at least three different theories for the split being put forward - two of which involve Angelina Jolie. Pitt publicist Cindy Guagenti issued a statement on behalf of the couple on Friday, in which it was announced they have officially separated after four and a half years of marriage. The most common reason being given for the split is that the couple argued over whether or not to have children. Pitt, 41, is reportedly keen to become a father while former Friends star Aniston is said to want to concentrate on her movie career. Another theory is that Aniston, 34, heard Pitt and his Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-star Jolie engaging in 'phone sex'. A source tells British newspaper the News Of The World, "(Brad and Angelina) would speak on the phone all the time - always speaking in hushed tones. There was no hiding their affection for each other. Jennifer listened in on the conversation via another extension. I don't know if she accidentally picked up the phone or deliberately did that. Either way, she went ballistic." And, in a further explanation involving sexy Tomb Raider star Jolie, UK tabloid the Daily Star Sunday writes that the marriage finally collapsed because Pitt adores playing father to Jolie's adopted son, Maddox. An insider tells the publication, "Jen became furious when he pointed out that, at 29, Angelina is six years younger than her and is managing to combine motherhood and a successful career."

Racing Stripes

Okay, first of all, this movie looks totally lame. But what really annoys me about it is the preview and it's fake Madonna "Don't Tell Me" music.

Do you want to predict the oscars?

Check out OscarWhore.com.

Phantom

This movie was so irritatingly bad I could barely stand it.

The music is horrid (especially the pseudo-80's-rock title song which is totally appropriate for a story set in 1870). The lyrics are even worse. The direction was piss-poor. Joel Schumaker might be the worst director working today; he's only managed to make two movies that I can stand to watch (The Lost Boys, Tigerland). I don't think it's a good thing when you walk out of a movie with the feeling that you just sat through two-and-a-half hours of non-stop slow-motion.

Having said that, I thought the cast was really good. Phantom and Christine had a really sexy moment during "Past The Point of No Return" that was unexpected (a song I didn't even remember was in the musical). In fact, I thought Gerard Butler was really effective as The Phantom (until the end when Joel Schumaker turns him into Sloth from The Goonies). This guy should be in more movies.

OK, I need to watch something else to get POTO out of my head. Oh good, Desperate Housewives!

Million Dollar Baby

Wow. The hype is justified. I did not expect to love this movie. I loved everything about it. It was stunning. You think you know where the movie is heading, and then the plot turns. It is exciting, witty and, mostly, devastating. I cried. The performances were amazing. I never really knew what the big deal was about Clint Eastwood until now. Morgan Freeman is so incredibly intelligent and warm. And Hilary Swank is truly phenomenal. I wouldn't be surprised if she wins another Oscar. I haven't seen anything like this all year (except maybe Kate Winslet). Same goes for the movie. I think it's been a pretty strong year for film, and this is right at the top of my list with Eternal Sunshine, Before Sunset, Kill Bill II and The Incredibles.

I have always loved movies about people finding themselves a family when they don't have one of their own (Boogie Nights comes to mind). I just didn't expect that, in the end, this is really what the film is about. Well, that and so many other things. Making sure your life counts and that you accomplish your dreams, believing in yourself, living your life without regret, the incredible impact your life can have on others. And finally, love. Not romantic or sexual or anything like that. Just unconditional. The kind that everyone needs in their life.

This movie will haunt you.

Jen & Brad

They split up. Big deal. Let's move on.

Garbage

I was wondering what happened to them the other day. They have released three really great albums. Well, their latest, "Bleed," will be released soon and, not kidding, features Dave Grohl on drums (on at least one track).

You lucky bastards...

You get 2 Us Weekly updates in 1 week!

The TV Guide ad proclaiming "They're baaaack!!!" (of Joan and Melissa Rivers) is scarier than when that phrase was spoken in Poltergeist.

Hugh Grant is dating someone named Jemima.

Tara Reid is double fisting a beer and a marguarita. And in the last issue she was talkin' shit about Lindsay Lohan for partying?

Goldie Hawn is starting to look like a wax version of herself. Stop the lip implants, girl.

You must purchase this issue (dated 1/17) for the Celine Dion picture alone (pg. 95).

NIN is back!

Nine Inch Nail's new album is to be called "With Teeth" (instead of the previously thought "Bleedthrough"). It will be released sometime in the spring (damnit, release it now!) and my favorite news about this album is that Dave Grohl is the drummer! He must be the hardest working musician today, between Foo Fighters, Probot, Queens of the Stone Age, and let us not forget he is still putting together compilations for Nirvana. I love you, Dave! And Trent!

Spider-Man: The Musical

Could be interesting. I heard U2 may write the music? And I hear now that Julie Taymor (who directed Titus the movie and Lion King the musical) will direct it.

What the Fock

Little Fockers, the third in the trilogy, is rumored to be in the works.

More Paris

Two more videotapes, that is. At least the rumors are saying so. If either is disturbing as the first one (she looked like a racoon about to get hit by a car) then I don't want to see them.

People's Choice

You know, those awards are not my choice. I totally hate how actors win best movie actor or actress and haven't even been in a movie in 3 years (Mel Gibson, anyone?). But this year's totally different.

"Jason Alexander and Malcolm-Jamal Warner set to host the 31st People's Choice Awards on Sunday."

Even though the "People" have bland "choices," there is no way they chose these hosts. I think I'll be watching Desperate Housewives, thank you.

Thank you, Fox

Does Fox finally have some good taste? The network won't air a Super Bowl ad for the cold remedy, Airborne, that would reveal Mickey Rooney's ass for about two seconds. The 84-year-old Rooney leaves a sauna after someone coughs. As he lunges for the door, his towel drops. "Our standards department reviewed the ad and it was deemed inappropriate for broadcast," said Lou d'Ermilio, spokesman for Fox Sports.

Inappropriate in what way? That 120 million people will simultaneously vomit?

Superman

Kate Bosworth will play Lois Lane (interesting choice) and Kevin Spacey will play Lex Luther (badass choice).

Just a normal working couple, my ass...

From Madonna's publicist, Liz Rosenberg:

"Mr. and Mrs. Ritchie spent their fourth wedding anniversary with 16 close friends at their country home. All these folks were at the wedding but I was not given names. Madonna is working on her documentary film of the tour and Guy is working on his film. Just a normal working class couple. Ha ha."

Ha.

Rats!

"CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) -- A viewer is suing NBC for $2.5 million, contending that he threw up because of a "Fear Factor" episode in which contestants ate rats mixed in a blender."

First off, I'm ashamed to see this guy is from Ohio. Makes the rest of us look bad. Poo on him! Secondly, his lawsuit was HANDWRITTEN. Okay.... and thirdly, the guy is watching Fear Factor. What the hell did he expect to see on there? Perhaps NBC should sue HIM for stupidity and ignorance.

His response in regards to why he's suing for so much?
"I just put any figure. You really think I expect to get $2.5 million?" he said.

Los Stoned Boys

The drummer for Los Lonely Boys, Ringo Garza, along with his wife, Lenora (love those names), were arrested for possession of marijuana. That's all dandy, but that's not the end of the story. They were arrested because two women, who were at the Garza's house the night before for a heaving night of drinking, filed a police report. At a hospital.

OK, I want to know more.

Whatever The Case May Be

Straight from the EW website.....

"Tonight, Lost reaffirmed my suspicions that nothing good is ever stored in silver briefcases. While diving in the Survivor Reward Pool (was I the only one who thought all that was missing was some free beer and all the Pringles they could eat?), Kate and Sawyer find two dead bodies (was I the only one who noticed people die in twos on this island?) and a case that Kate takes a serious interest in. I myself had taken a serious interest in Kate — what exactly had she done to become a dangerous wanted criminal who gets extradited across continents with a silver briefcase? — and so how very glad was I to find out that she is actually a bad, bad bank robber with a bad, bad bank-robbing boyfriend? And then that she shot her bad, bad boyfriend in order to save the life of the bank manager, and that she was only robbing the bank to get . . . a tiny toy airplane. That belonged to someone she loved/killed. So. Kate = murderer. Dammit, I already knew that. Guess I have to keep watching the show. Crap.

Meanwhile, young Shannon is feeling useless. Why? Well, because Boone, her increasingly creepy brother, told her she was. Now, while I don't believe the girl is without skills — did you see that pretty pink Paris Hilton outfit she whipped up for the evening's festivities? — I do tire of her bratty-ass attitude. So when Sayid started looking at her with his big, smart, dreamy eyes, looking at her the way I want him to look at me, I wanted to die. Screw the polar bear — what I want to know is how the hell they're going to justify the brilliant former Iraqi intelligence officer's attraction to Vapid Blond Chick? Men. They're all the same. Sigh.

Shannon proves to have a dubbed singing voice the likes of which Ashlee Simpson would probably kill for right now, and also the ability to translate the weird French words that Rousseau (crazy French lady who lives in a box) scribbled next to a bunch of math equations about latitude and longitude. Turns out Rousseau wrote down the lyrics to a festive little number called ''La Mer,'' a.k.a. the Bobby Darin hit ''Beyond the Sea,'' which ran under the closing credits of a little movie about a fish called Finding Nemo. But Shannon doesn't say that; she just says something about how the son of the guy she was dating in Saint-Tropez constantly played the video of a computer-animated movie about a fish, which is odd because Finding Nemo is a Disney movie and Disney owns ABC and don't you think they could have just come out and said Finding Nemo? Frankly, this whole bit made no sense, and I'll say it again: It all seemed set up to get Sayid to look at Shannon with his pretty eyes, and I don't like it. I don't like it one bit. After all I've done for you, J.J.!

Bright moments, though, in this emotionally challenging episode included Kate head-butting Sawyer not once but twice! Seeing that she used to have a bad, bad boyfriend definitely cleared up her attraction to Sawyer, by the way, and Jack's consistently petulant and holier-than-thou attitude is starting to make me think that we'd all be better off if Kate and Sawyer — who, after his episode trying to get the silver briefcase open, I shall now refer to as Monkey Boy — would just get it on already. And although it seemed strange there was so little general concern about the abducted Claire, I liked that Formerly Catatonic Woman took an interest in Currently Catatonic Charlie and really drew him out of his shell. Nice prayer time. Really. Nothing stupidly emotionally manipulative about that, no sir.

And then there's the tiny toy airplane. I have no idea what that thing is. The best I could do is that somehow it's the plane they're all on, and the universe has folded in on itself, and when Kate took it out of the bank, they were all doomed because Claire's impending baby is gonna really like toy airplanes. Or something. Dude, I'm totally Lost. Boom.

Discussion questions:

1. All right. So Boone is clearly nuts. And so is Locke, maybe. But still, what is that thing out in the woods that they found last episode and they're spending all day, every day, digging up? The length of time it's taking for them to dig leads me to believe what I said before: spaceship.

2. Where's Hurley? He's not easy to misplace.

3. The shots of the waves crashing on the beach and making all the people run to save their belongings turned my stomach, what with the tsunami and all, and for a brief moment I was like Oh my God how could they show that how insensitive I'm appalled. And then I got really pissed at myself for becoming one of those people, like the kind of people who call the FCC when they don't cut the f-bombs out of Saving Private Ryan, and now I just feel weird about myself in general, and concerned that I am becoming my mother.

4. Where did the polar bear come from?

4a. How the hell are they going to justify the brilliant former Iraqi intelligence officer's attraction to Vapid Blond Chick?

5. The Korean lady overhears Kate and Jack talking about what Kate did to get arrested. And the Korean lady can understand English, don't forget. So now what? She tells Michael. Michael tells Hurley. Hurley invents . . . a legal system?

6. Do the extras ever get pissed off when they're in the background doing all the hard labor and the people with their names in the front credits are just standing around looking mopey?

7. How does one learn how to head-butt?"

Hmmmmm....

Wonder what the "real" story is. I'm no expert but I'm thinking there is a pretty big difference between suffering from a viral infection and having nerve damage. I'm thinking maybe it wouldn't be such a good idea to seek any medical attention from her particular doctors.

"The good news is, Jennifer Garner does not have a viral infection, contrary to earlier reports from her spokeswoman, Nicole King. The bad news: she's actually suffering from nerve damage to her back, King now says. Entertainment Tonight quotes King as saying that Garner's doctors attribute her ailment to an injury suffered during shooting of an Alias episode."

Alias Recap

So I liked it better than Television Without Pity, but there certainly is a truth to not knowing exactly what the missions are/were about - especially the next day when you think about the episode. Here's what they had to say:

Welcome back, children! It's time to put yo spy on! Okay, so, Angela Bassett shows up long enough to recruit Syd to some new super-secret faction of the CIA that's called "Authorized Personnel Only." When Syd shows up for her first day of work, who should be there but Vaughn, Spy Daddy, and Dixon? Oh, and Sloane, who seems to be in charge of the whole kit and caboodle. But not really, because Syd's actually been hired to watch Sloane's ass and report on it. As Syd says, "Pity the man who has THAT job."

Then there's some sort of mission that Syd and Vaughn have to go on. Does it really matter what the mission is? No. No, it does not. So, Syd's hair looks fabulous and Vaughn looks hot and he and Syd are taking it slow but they totally aren't, and then there's a train and fight and then another fight and…then we get the obligatory flashback sequences explaining to the masses what happened at the end of last year when Syd found that sheaf of black paper with nothing on it. Oh, but wait. There was something on it. And, at the end of the first hour, we find out what it was: Jack asked for permission to kill Irina. And he got it. So Irina's dead. Just like that. Guess Lena Olin's really not coming back this year, huh?

Right. So Syd needs an excuse to go visit her half-sister, and she gets it and goes and…wait, what? Oh, right. It doesn't matter. Nadia and Syd meet and hug and talk about something, and then there's some second mission that deals with the first but is actually about stealing a samurai sword or something. Somehow, this sword requires Marshall's presence, so he joins the team as well. Yeah. Say it with me. NO IDEA. The chase for the sword takes up about twenty minutes, and then Jack saves Syd's ass and Uncle Inappropriate makes an appearance (ew!) and there's some secret behind Irina's death and then Syd gets captured by Rick Yune and he's totally hot and Nadia has to come out of retirement to save her half-sister and she's totally hot and Syd finds out some bad news: Rick Yune was hired to assassinate her. By Irina Derevko. So much for happy families.

Who is Uncle Inappropriate? That is the only part of her review I don't quite get.

Put this in the "nobody cares anymore" box...

The Osbournes will return for one final season in their MTV show. Tune in - or don't tune in - beginning January 17.

And the awards we've all been waiting for...

Ready? And the nominees for best costume design (by the costume design guild):

Nominees in the Fantasy/Period film category

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
The Phantom of the Opera
Ray

Nominees Contemporary

Ocean's Twelve
The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou
Alfie
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Kill Bill Vol. 2

I'm on the edge of my seat. How long do we have to wait to know who the winners are?

F'in A(lias)

16 million viewers!! This has got to be a record (not counting that post-Super Bowl episode).

Pretty good, too, eh? I thought that her daddy killed her mommy plotline was a little underwhelming and was relieved when we find out there's a bit more to that. Jack is turning into a nasty character. I also thought that it was a nice touch to make the audience think everyone was quitting. The whole episode was very first-season-y. Can't wait to keep watching!

Hang him out to dry

From the front page at Yahoo!:

"'American Idol' reject William Hung says he wants to play only good-guys in his fledgling acting career."

There are so many things wrong with that sentence.

The Monthly Us Weekly Update

Tara Reid trashes on Lindsay Lohan for being partying too much. Say what???!

I'm mad at Jen Garner for doing Elektra. It looks dumb. But it makes me mad that Us Weekly is telling its readers how she got her "Elektra Body." Seriously? Have you seen Alias?

Do you think Ashlee Simpson's dad locked her up in a tower when she was a kid?

I think Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek are doin' it.

Britney and Kevin Spears are so trailer. They are dry humping on a beach chair in a resort with people sitting in chairs all around them.

Debra Winger is Dawn Anna in a Lifetime movie. Maybe I would care if I knew who the fuck Dawn Anna was.

I think Mandy Moore and Zach Braff are really cute together.

OMG, Paris and Nicole have two brothers. Who knew?

Finished in 15 minutes. That was a big issue!

Tsunami

You can go to iTunes and donate money to help tsunami victims in need. I just did. Felt good.

New Rule

Janet Jackson's nipple can no longer be discussed. I am so sick of hearing about it in year-end recaps in every magazine, every TV show and every internets site.

Backstreet Boys are.... religious?

(Former?) Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell will release his solo debut next fall, and it will be in the exciting world of Christian music. His goal is to work with Michael W. Smith, and my goal is to never listen to the album.

Ashlee... make it stop!

"Either she's masochistically begging for torture or it's all a sick joke played upon the public, Ashlee Simpson, again, proved she's destined for a career other than singing. During last night's Orange Bowl half time show, Simpson unleashed her vocals skills to a filled Miami Pro Player Stadium audience and was handed back a very loud chorus of boos as she painfully finished singing.

One viewer writes, "No lip-synching. This time she decided to sing. The performance was horrendous and the tens of thousands of people at the Orange Bowl in Florida consequently booed as loud as they could afterwards. I certainly hope this is the end of this no-talent fraud!"

If Simpson isn't smart enough to realize it's time to give it up, perhaps her manager father might now have the balls or, at least, the sympathy to remove her from further public humiliation. Of course, we're sure to hear an endless litany of excuses as to why she couldn't sing properly or perhaps the Simpson clan will come clean and admit sister Jessica's been doing backing vocals for Ashlee all along. Either way, it's time for Joe Simpson to stop pimping Ashlee and go back to being her Dad."

American Idol Changes

It needed an extreme makeover bad, if you asked me. The show just dragged. So instead of dragging on for so many weeks, they're just going to put more episodes on during the week. From Kristin at E! Online:
Change numero uno: The celebrity guest judges will appear during the first auditions, but they won't be invited to participate during the final sing-offs. Brandy, LL Cool J and Gene Simmons are lined up. Change number two: (Anyone still awake here?) The semifinal round will last just three weeks instead of five and there will be 24 chosen instead of 32. And number three: (Wake up!) During the semifinals (starting Feb. 21), contestants will be divided into two groups: one which will compete on Monday, one on Tuesday. Then on Wednesday we'll get to vote out four contestants (two from each group) after three weeks of that and three times Seacrest's signature long pauses. Hurrah! We'll have the 12 finalists. [Zzzz...]

Jen's alias?

Jennifer Garner is sick, and there is a rumor on the internets that it's more along the lines of morning sick, if you know what I mean.

Nothing to crow about

I'm trying to come up with the worst titles for all my posts today. Working?

2005 will see not one, but two Sheryl Crow records! (I know Jen is a fan.) One will be a stripped down "artist" record (whatever that means) and the other will be straight-up Britney-style pop. Just kidding, but it will be a straight up pop record.

No longer hung out to dry

From E!:

Sandra Bullock has written a $1 million check to the Red Cross for tsunami relief, while Leonardo DiCaprio has made a "sizable" pledge to UNICEF. And American Idol reject William Hung is donating sales of albums and posters to vicitms.

William Hung? That's great and all, but I think it's random that he's mentioned with those other celebrities, no?

Curb Your Alanis

Alanis is going to headline a new show, Curb Your Enthusiasm-style, that will feature the antics that occur backstage on tour. She wants to remind people that she has a sense of humor... especially those who forgot that she was on You Can't Do That On Television way back when I watched Nickelodeon.

The reality of midseason

All the new shows are starting to air on network television this month. In this series, I will explain what each is about, and you, the reader, may decide whether you will watch or not. My guess is that you won't, because most of the shows suck.

Napoleon Poopyhead

What a dumb movie. I laughed at the absurdity of the first line, and thought the ending was absurdly hilarious. Other than that, I was annoyed. These people are NOT realistic. They are NOT funny. They are grating. I kept looking at the time left of the movie. The last time I did that was Dogville. Waste of time. Do not rent. Back to Alias on DVD.

Miss Congeniality is Miss Generous

Sandy Bullock donated $1 million to the tsunami aid fund. Wow. I really like her.

D-List

Kathy Griffin's reality show will be back on Bravo. This woman used to annoy the heck out of me, but then I saw her live at a benefit and it was hilarious. Add season pass to tivo.

Like us, damnit!

U2's new video for "All Because of You" will be shown during halftime of the Orange Bowl tonight. They are getting really good at this self-promotion thing.

I'm sorry, I don't have an alias...

I have two. Season 1 and 2, to be precise. Now that I'm done watching Season 1 of The O.C., I needed another show to take up all my time when I could otherwise be doing some good for the world. I watched the complete Season 1 of Alias (minus two-and-a-half episodes that I'll watch right after work tonight). Good stuff. So many twists and turns. Did you know that it's returning on Wednesday night after Lost with a two-hour episode? You best be watchin'!

Happy New Years, Suckahs!

I'm back from 5 hella cold days in Ohio, and 5 hella drunk days in Los Angeles.

Tough loss

Martha Stewart's team losing a holiday decorating contest in West Virginia's Alderson Federal Prison, People.com reports. Their entry, paper cranes that hung on the ceiling, "wasn't all that great," according to one inmate.

Paper cranes? What the....?

Trim Spa.... baby!

"Anna Nicole Smith's next husband better like her for her TrimSpa'd body, because that's about all she has going for her right now.

A federal appeals court on Thursday threw out a lower court judge's 2002 ruling that awarded Smith $88.5 million of her late billionaire husband's fortune. Thursday's ruling from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals is a serious blow to Smith's hope of claiming any money from Marshall's estate."

I just feel terrible for her, don't you?
